Homework

An important aspect of the classroom

Teachers use homework to determine whether or not you know what you were taught.

Homework can be very frustrating...

Have you ever gotten home and realized that you forgot your homework in your locker?

Have you ever started a worksheet, only to realize that you did not remember what you were taught in class?

Have you ever wished that you were given more time to work on a homework assignment in class?

Do you learn best by watching something being done and then doing it yourself?

Do you learn better when you can get help and discuss difficult lessons with your classmate?

↓↓↓↓↓↓↓

Flipped classroom

One of the best outcomes of the flipped classroom is that it makes doing homework a whole lot less frustrated

Flipped classroom and traditional classroom

An example: Grammar

Grammar is going to be the only subject that is fully flipped----Start from reviewing the parts of speech in units followed by sentence structure units

You will get a Student Success Sheet (SSS) at the start of each unit

Examples of language Flipped classroom

  • Grammar

Before class

All instruction will be in video format: starting from reviewing the parts of speech in units followed by sentence structure units

Students will have a Student Success Sheet (SSS) at the start of the unit: it would be kept in language arts binder and would be contain the structured notes and handouts for the entire unit

After watching the video, students will complete a Watch Summarize and Question (WSQ)

After practicing, students’ understanding will be test by taking an edmodo mastery quiz

In class

Students will be doing fun activities and practicing the lesson concepts

  • Reading

Webtool could be used for discussing topics related to novels and areas of study

Watching some reading comprehension strategies and skills videos

Edmodo assignment and google document assignments help students to learn more about later

  • Vocabulary

Watching student-created word meaning videos

Regular workbook exercises and unit tests

↓↑

Fun review games to prepare students for nuit tests

  • Writing

Several writing projects: essays and narrative stories

Writing that only takes a class period to finish

Benefits for students

  • Allowing students to take greater responsibility for your learning

  • Students could build more extensive vocabulary and use the English language with more grammatical precision

  • Students could get more 1-on-1 help from teacher

  • Students will spend more time applying and processing the skills they learnt in class

  • Students have an opportunity to learn using the internet and tools that will open up doors that they never knew existed

Benefits for teachers

  • Get to know the students better

  • Teachers would get better understand about how to teach the students in the ways they learn best

  • More hands-on projects with students

  • Get extra help to students that need it

  • Better use of class time

  • Watch students learn and take responsibility

  • Use technology that will assist students’ learning

A guide by Chip Heath & Dan Heath:

Adopting a flipped classroom model requires creating a new culture of learning

Flipped class stakeholders :

Students Transferring the ownership of learning to the students

Administrators Bring them into conversation

Parents Teaching them about a flipped classroom using a flipped classroom approach

Strategies to engage key stakeholders

Students

Students should be the most engaged participants in the learning process

It’s a sign that students are engaged and teachers are transferring learning ownership to students if they say “This is hard” or “It is unlike anything I have ever experienced”.

Tip

Students are doing all the work in class.

Administrators

Bring them into the conversation

Open and honest conversation is one of the great starting point with your administrators.

Talk to them about how this will increase the student engagement in the classroom and be communicative about the changes will be making in the classroom.

Or just take them to a flipped class. There is nothing like seeing the flipped classroom in action.

Tip

Have an open and honest conversation.

Take them to a flipped class.

Parents

Parents generally love the flipped classroom model because:

1.Their children gets more individual attention from their teacher

2.Parents does not have to be the content expert at home

It you find some parents are reluctant to adopt the flipped classroom model, you could

Teach them about a flipped classroom using a flipped classroom approach

Tip

What better way to teach parents about the flipped classroom model than flip the back to school night?

Making a video for:

Back to school night

Curriculum night

Open house

To explain how the class works and the parents could view ahead of time and bring questions to ask you when they show up

Students Transferring ownership of learning to the students may prove difficult but in the end will be worth it

Administrators Invite skeptical administrators to observe a flipped classroom in person

Parents Use the flipped-classroom approach to educate parents

Transforming a culture of learning takes time and support from everybody involved.
