<The images/ videos/ partial content are from the internet. These materials are for educational reference only. >

•Online learning + face-to-face learning

Use online resources to:

Make content available outside of class.

  • PPT before class.

  • Video lecture.

  • Reading notes (textbooks, extra learning materials, etc.)

  • Associated online exercises. [to check whether students have watched the videos, read the lecture notes, understand the key content, etc.]

Ask them to

  • Sing an English song

  • Develop a Kahoot! Game (target academic vocabulary)

  • Recommend a TED talk and explain why

  • Recommend a short story/ novel/ poem and explain why

  • Participate in the lesson planning

3 times

  • Listen to you once

  • Watch it again

  • Discuss it with other classmates

A Common Misunderstanding

What do we do in class?

Traditional homework

  • Practice speaking, writing, reading & writing

  • Practice using the key vocabulary and sentence structures

Normally, how do you plan your lesson? How do you decide the level of difficulty?

Normally,

  • Educated guess on knowledge levels

  • Limited information on students

  • Too easy. Most students bored

  • Too difficult. Most students lost

  • Middle?

Benefits of online learning

Move at own pace

  • Familiar --- faster

  • Unfamiliar --- pause, re-watch, other resources

  • Immediate feedback

Engage when most alert

  • Early or late

Take breaks when needed

Pace of learning --- traditional classroom: Synchronous - Time-based learning

  • All students get materials, are assessed, and move on to the next topic at same time.

  • Regardless of their individual performance or gaps in knowledge

Pace of learning --- blended classroom: Asynchronous - master-based learning

  • Acknowledges that some students need more time, and some need less time.

  • Give students as much time as needed.

  • Students move forward when ready.

E-learning --- Common doubts & challenges

About technical resources

  • Affordable? Devices, wifi, technical problems, etc.

  • Reliable? Will it distract students from the real learning? Is it really effective?

  • Easy-to-use? Can teachers/ students master the IT tools quickly?

About students

  • Trustworthy? Self-regulation? Independent learning skills?

About teachers

  • Time-consuming?
